NJHS Strengthening Cross-Campus Connections Through Service and Leadership

PYEONGTAEK, South Korea—Humphreys West Elementary School and Humphreys Middle School recently partnered in a collaborative initiative that brings National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) students onto the elementary campus to support instruction, literacy, and student engagement. This cross-campus effort reflects a shared commitment to building strong, connected learning communities across the Humphreys complex.

Through this partnership, NJHS students from Humphreys Middle School (HMS) will visit classrooms and large group specialist learning spaces at Humphreys West Elementary School (HWES) throughout the semester, where they will support instruction, assist classroom and specialist teachers, and read with elementary students. The experience provides meaningful service opportunities for middle school students while enriching learning experiences for younger learners.

Aligned with the Department of War Education Activity Blueprint for Continuous Improvement, student participants engage in purposeful collaboration that supports student growth, leadership development, and community engagement. The initiative exemplifies how schools can work together to create authentic learning experiences that extend beyond individual campuses.

“We desired to create multiple layers of partnership within this initiative,” said Twa’Lea Jordan, HWES educator and co-coordinator of the initiative. “So, we included the HWES Student Council and our Pacific Student Transition Program (PSTP), also known as the Ambassador Program which is led by Ms. Karen Morton. By connecting these programs with NJHS, both schools reinforced a shared focus on leadership development and service.”

This partnership underscores a shared commitment across the Humphreys complex for collaboration, leadership, and student success. By intentionally connecting programs, campuses, and students, Humphreys West Elementary School and Humphreys Middle School continue to enhance learning experiences and develop the skills students need to thrive.

“Our students benefit when we create intentional opportunities to learn from and support one another,” said Ms. Janieceal Bell, NJHS advisor, HMS educator and co-coordinator.

“This collaboration allows students to practice leadership, service, and communication in a meaningful, real-world way.”
