On With the Snow: A Cherished HWES Tradition
When Humphreys West Elementary School (HWES) opened its doors in 2017, it welcomed not only new students but also new traditions. One of the most beloved is the “On With the Snow” Winter Concert, a heartwarming performance by our second graders that has become a highlight of the season.
The inaugural concert was spearheaded by Mr. Han and Ms. Rho, who brought their passion for music and community from Yongsan Elementary. Their vision was simple yet powerful: create a celebration that would make second grade unforgettable. As Mr. Han reflects, “We commenced this activity because we want the students to have a memorable second grade year. Having them perform in front of a big audience with their parents recording them makes the experience a lasting moment.”
Auditions for special roles such as Snow Monsters and Shovelers are open to all second graders. Students receive a script to practice at home, and when ready, parents record their auditions and send them to the teachers. The second grade team then reviews the videos together to select roles. Additional speaking lines are assigned within individual classrooms, giving every child a chance to shine.
Rehearsals begin in October, starting with mastering the songs before blending them with the acting. By early December, the magic is ready for the stage. The concert is first presented in the Humphreys Middle School auditorium, allowing families and the community to share in the joy. Two additional performances follow for Humphreys students, one for lower grades and one for upper grades.
This collaborative effort involves music teachers, who guide students through the songs, and parents, who help transform the stage with beautiful snowflake decorations. As Dr. Aguiguin notes, “The winter concert enabled the second graders to shine, grow a little braver, and feel proud of what they can do together while celebrating the season of joy!”
A Tradition of Joy and Growth
Over the years, “On With the Snow” has become more than a performance. It is a tradition that builds confidence, creativity, and community. Mr. McKenzie sums it up perfectly: “Building confidence and performance skills, as well as some secret Speaking & Listening skills, is the name of the game with this heart-warming performance!”
Teachers echo this sentiment: Ms. Garrett: “Second graders proudly carried on the tradition of performing On With the Snow, showcasing their hard work and spreading joy to parents and the school community.
Mrs. Arebalos: “This performance is the result of hard work, courage, and creativity. Watching them grow and believe in themselves has been inspiring!
Mrs. Lindsey: “Our second graders lit up the stage in their winter performance of ‘On With the Snow.’ They shined brilliantly after weeks of hard work proving to themselves that with dedication they can create something truly magical together!
Ms. Ku: “Every year, it’s so amazing to be part of the wonderful performance our second graders showcase as they fill the room with excitement and pride of their hard work!”
As Mrs. Smith beautifully states, “Our second graders’ performance in On With the Snow is a cherished experience they will remember for a lifetime.” And that is exactly what this tradition is all about: creating lasting memories, celebrating joy, and helping students discover the magic of what they can achieve together.
