Open House, Open Hearts: Celebrating a Strong Start in Second Grade

At Humphreys West Elementary, families who attended Dr. Aguiguin’s second grade Open House were more than spectators; they became active participants in their children’s learning.

The evening began with the “Spot Me” challenge, where students and parents searched a colorful photo collage for their child’s picture and shaded the matching number on a hundreds chart. From there, students led their families through displays of independent work and collaborative projects. Parents also learned about classroom routines and the positive behavior system that reinforces respect and responsibility. At the math station, children flipped answer cards, recorded responses on dry erase boards, and proudly explained their thinking. Families gathered at the writing table to compose personal notes to their children. These notes will serve as mentor texts for an upcoming writing project, interweaving academic growth with family support.

Parents praised the interactive, student-led format of the event:

“My son particularly enjoyed flipping the cards and writing the number down; he beamed the entire time,” said parent Michael A. Duncan.

“The scavenger hunt and writing the letter to our children was probably the best part,” added parent Heather West. “It integrated the children’s lives at school with interest from home, and the kids were so proud to show off their work.” 

“Brooks was very excited and proud to show his sister and me all the different things the class is working on and specifically his work at each station,” parent Lois Aborgast said, reflecting on her son’s role as host. “He was a great tour guide, and we enjoyed seeing how the class operates day to day.”

With full family participation and enthusiastic feedback, Dr. Aguiguin’s Open House set a new benchmark for interactive, student-led events. Its success was so evident that Mr. Duncan suggested documenting every detail, from scavenger hunt instructions to letter-writing prompts, as a model approach for engaging families, showcasing student learning, and strengthening the home–school partnership at Open House.

Dr. Aguiguin’s Open House stands as a shining example of how inviting families into the classroom can unlock excitement, pride, and shared purpose for the school year ahead.
