Humphreys West first graders celebrate 120 days of school with spy-themed math investigation
CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea – Humphreys West Elementary School celebrated the mathematical milestone of 120 days of school through an interactive and imaginative learning experience. Parents, teachers, and 186 first-grade students came together to take part in the special event, which focused on exploring the numbers 1-120 through hands-on investigative activities.
To begin the day, teachers and students arrived dressed as spy agents—complete with spy badges, trench coats, and detective gear. The first-grade hallway was transformed into a dramatic crime scene filled with caution tape, evidence boxes, warning signs, and the footprints of “super spies.” As students stepped into the hallway, they were greeted with a sense of awe, curiosity, and excitement. The immersive environment immediately sparked their thinking and set the stage for a day of discovery.
Students were assigned the role of detectives tasked with tracking down the mysterious villain known as “Zero.” Upon entering their classrooms, they received a top-secret mission: investigate the scenes, gather clues, and ultimately discover the identity of the “Zero Hero.” Before beginning their investigation, each student was fingerprinted and checked in with their official spy badge, officially launching their mission.
Working in teams, students rotated through eight classrooms, each presenting a new investigative challenge centered on the number 120. At every station, students solved a case and collected clues that would help them complete their mission. Activities included creating a trail mix with 120 pieces, cracking secret codes using base-ten blocks to represent 120, placing 120 sticky notes on a partner, and participating in fast-paced “Minute to Win It” challenges that reinforced counting and number sense.
Throughout the event, students investigated each scene while practicing key math skills related to counting, grouping, and understanding numbers within 120—an important first-grade mathematics standard.
“This is the only event where we see 100 percent of our students actively engaged in learning activities,” said first grade teacher Ms. Erika Choi. “It’s amazing to watch them have so much fun while learning.”
After completing all eight investigations, students gathered their final clues and successfully uncovered the mystery of the “Zero Hero.” The day concluded with celebration and pride as students reflected on the clues they solved and the mathematical skills they practiced.
The event highlighted the creativity of the teaching team and demonstrated how immersive, hands-on learning can make mathematics both meaningful and memorable for young learners.
