Humphreys West Elementary and Baedari Elementary share a day of learning
PYEONGTAEK, South Korea – Humphreys West Elementary School recently hosted a cultural exchange with Baedari Elementary, its Korean sister school, bringing together 24 Korean third graders and their teachers and 24 HWES third graders, eight specialist teachers, and dedicated staff members to create a day filled with learning, laughter, and friendship.
The visit began with warm classroom introductions where students used Google Translate to ask each other about their favorite things. This activity sparked curiosity and connection across languages. From there, the day unfolded into a series of engaging experiences designed to showcase the richness of both cultures.
In physical education class, all 48 students participated in the Pacer running test, cheering each other on in a spirit of teamwork. Art sessions offered creative expression through ceramics with Ms. Koo and drawing with Ms. Serrano. Host Nation rotations led by Dr. Yi and Ms. Paek immersed students in Korean and American traditions. Gingerbread decorating and an Emoji Movie mystery added a festive touch to the day.
Music brought energy and joy as Ms. Howell introduced percussion and singing, and Ms. Pancierra guided students through Spanish dancing. A pizza lunch on stage, generously provided by the PTSO, gave students time to relax and share stories. The PTSO also ensured every participant felt appreciated by providing gift bags for students and presents for teachers.
The day concluded in the library with heartfelt goodbyes and gift exchanges. This moment underscored the purpose of the visit: to promote goodwill and strengthen international friendships.
Third grade teacher Ms. Rauth, MPP specialist Ms. Taylor, and SLI support teacher Ms. Cribbs, provided invaluable support in making this event a success. Partnerships like these remind us that education is not only about academics – tt is about building bridges that connect communities and cultures.
Looking ahead, Humphreys West Elementary is excited to continue fostering these meaningful connections with Baedari Elementary and other sister schools. By sharing experiences and learning from one another, we create opportunities that enrich our students’ understanding of the world and prepare them to thrive in a global community.
